Experience

Mr. Brown completed the requirements for a degree in electrical engineering at North Carolina State University in 1971.  As he completed his undergraduate education, he worked at Carolina Power and Light Company (CP&L) as an engineering aide.  During that period, 1968 to 1971, Mr. Brown worked in communications and relay design.

Upon completion of his BSEE degree, Mr. Brown went to work for CP&L in Raleigh, North Carolina as an Electrical Engineer.   From 1971 to 1978, Mr. Brown was promoted to Senior Engineer and then Project Engineer.  During this, period, Mr. Brown designed relay and metering systems for many transmission and substation facilities.  He also completed testing of a 400 node short circuit and network reduction computer program.

In 1978, Mr. Brown accepted the position of Division Superintendent of Services in Aberdeen, North Carolina. As Division Superintendent, Mr. Brown was responsible for management of 41 engineering, technical and craft employees.  The group Mr. Brown supervised was responsible for installation and maintenance of polyphase and transformer rated metering equipment, distribution substation construction, operation and maintenance, garage operation and fleet maintenance, communications, and dispatch

In 1986, Mr. Brown accepted a new position with CP&L in Asheboro, North Carolina. As Area Distribution Manager, Mr. Brown managed the operation, maintenance, construction, and engineering for the CP&L distribution system extending from Asheboro to Wadesboro, North Carolina.

In 1991, Mr. Brown joined UTEC as a partner.

The following is a sample of Mr. Brown’s recent project work.

 

   Project Manager for Primary Distribution System upgrades for NC Stare University (three projects)

 

   Project Manager for 100 kV Transmission System Relaying at High Point NC.

 

   Design of a 2 MW standby / load management generator plant for the North Carolina Zoological Park.

 

   Design of 3,000 kW standby generation facilities at Harwood’s Mill WTP in Newport News, VA.

 

   Project manager for the installation of the SCADA system for Greenwood, SC CPW.

 

   Design of 35 kV distribution line for the City of Monroe, NC.

 

   Design of 6400 kW Peak Shaving Generation Facilities at Gaffney, SC.

 

   Turbine generator failure analysis for the Greenwood, SC, CPW.

 

   System protective coordination study, City of Newberry, SC
